THE DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Good day friends,
I am glad to be with you again. Today, let’s take a look at social media.
Social media have become a prominent part of life for many youths of today. Study shows that youth of nowadays spend more time each day on their phones and computers than they do, sleeping. This shows that social media is gaining in popularity every day.
My name is Rachel Onah and the programme is city echoes on Radio Nigeria, Treasure 98.5 FM, Port Harcourt; the station that gives you pleasure without measure. Welcome!
Social media are interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and network. They include: facebook, whatsapp, twitter, instagram, linkedin and so on.
Often times, people get so much engulfed in browsing the social media that they tend to forget important appointments, have their food burnt while on fire, miss their ways or worse still get involved in fatal accidents that in most cases claim their lives. They equally forget that there’s a limit to everything.
Research shows that students who spend more of their time on social media end up with low grades in their examinations.
Arguments on:
How long people spend on social media;
Effects of social media on the users;
Age limit advisable for the use of social media;
Benefits, as well as the different reasons for the use of social media pushed Collins Madu to the streets of the Garden City where the people made his day with various opinions. Let’s join him.
However, it’s note-worthy that social media also have some positive impacts on the youths. Through social media platforms communication has been enhanced effectively to strengthen relationships among friends, families, business groups and so on. More so, products, ideas and services have been easily marketed online via social media platforms such as facebook, whatsapp, twitter, instagram, linkedin and the likes by industrious youths.
Just like any other facility available for human use, social media have some bitter and sweet memories. Therefore, parental guidance should be employed to monitor the activities of youths so as to ensure their safety on the use of social media. Youths on their own part, should embrace social media more as instrument for meaningful, developmental and of course, constructive purposes for a better tomorrow.
This is where we end today’s edition of city echoes produced by Constance Egwuagu. Join us next week, same time for a fresh edition on Radio Nigeria, Treasure 98.5 FM, Port Harcourt.
