GOVERNORS OWING SALARIES
Unpaid Salaries: NLC to deal with Erring Governors
President Muhammad Buhari recently revealed that 27 Governors among the 36 states of Nigeria, are owing workers salaries. In reaction to this, the Nigeria Labour Congress has Threatened stiff penalties against such state Governors.
The Nigeria Labour Congress says it will handle state governors over non payment of worker's salaries and payment of half salaries by some states.
The NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, said on Thursday that the congress would meet with all its state boards to urge them to react to this inhuman behavior by some state Governors in Nigeria.
"We will undertake stringent measures against some state Governors, who have made it a habit to owe workers salaries, leading to severe hardship by Nigerian
workers and we will have a meeting with all our state chambers to react adequately to some of these difficulties".
"We need to look into, precisely what the issues are and we will likewise put suitable managers on notification."
"We will pronounce a severe sanctions against some state Governors in Nigeria, who delight in owing workers salaries, and are insensitive to the plight of Nigerian workers.
"At the point when the economy was flourishing, they didn't appreciate it, now that there is a test, they are the terribly hit, it ought not be so; these are our contentions.
"Political office holders are still gathering their cash despite the fact that they cannot pay workers salaries, they are still collecting their security vote and they are still awarding sham contracts."
He said most nations that had encountered economic problems, always look for ways to satisfy their workforce, before engaging in frivolities.
Wabba clarified that workers salaries should not be seen as a priviledge but a right, earned in accordance with global best practices and in consonance with Convention 138 of the International Labor Organization.
"Salaries of workers in Nigeria are not commensurate with their labou , and it is very wrong for these Governors to say they cannot pay salaries.I think it is something that should be denounced.
" How much is N18,000? compared to the money being looted on a daily basis by these state Governors
"Don't likewise overlook, the fact that Nigerian workers deserve to live comfortable lives.
"In the event that you don't pay them or pay them half of their compensation, how will they live a respectable life?
"By what method will these workers have the capacity to deal with their prompt needs?''
He called on state governors not to cut or stop payment of workers salaries because of economic recession but rather fashion out methods of generating income for their states.
The NLC president additionally noticed that a few governors were threatening to sack workers.
He cautioned that such action will cause problems in the country, leading to a high rate of insecurity.
"As of now, we have composed an extremely solid letter and we are proposing additionally to connect with these governors to perceive how best we can take a look at this issue."
How inhuman can these state Governors be to the poor Nigerian worker? These were the same people who voted them into power and all of a sudden, the Nigerian worker cannot be paid his wages anymore. This is a development that must be checked, if we want the Nigerian worker to remain honest and dutiful. If we don't want insecurity to increase, it's better we look into this trend. Nigeria as a Nation is already battling with youth unemployment, why are these state Governors Trying to add to this complication?
What do you think about this issue of non payment of salaries by some state Governors?
