Most cases of fire outbreak can actually be averted because of our attitudes. Considering the harm done by fire, there is need for us to take extra care in averting fire incident, in our homes, offices, churches or wherever we find ourselves. Lives can be saved by taking that extra care. You can see an example of the avoidable mistakes I am talking about, in the following story.
A family of six, including a one-week-old child, narrowly escaped death, after their home in Okokomaiko part of Lagos went up on fire at the early hours of Tuesday. The flame was said to have been brought about by a blast from a motorbike that was kept inside the building. A lady, called Mrs Oyinkansola, who was setting up a supper, purportedly situated her cooking stove and a local lamp light, also called atukpa, near the motorbike, prompting the blast. It took the intervention of neighbors, who made the way to the house for the trapped occupants to get away, with some of them taken to the hospital. In the mean time, the owner of the building and proprietor of the smoldered motorbike, Mr. Ishola Lukman, pointed fingers at Oyinkansola for the flame episode, taking note of the fact that she had been cautioned a few times not to cook in the veranda. His words: "She deliberately set my new motorcycle ablaze when she chose to put her lamp near it. If she had cooked by the side of her flat the motorcycle would not have caught fire. I have been stopping my motorcycles at that same spot for long. "This specific one is new and it is the third I have purchased. The flame would have been huge, if not for the quick reaction of neighbors who acted the hero."
What do we learn from the above incident. We interviewed some experts: Mr Victor Olanipekun and Mrs Veronica Amadi live on air, who gave the following tips
- Things like naked lights should not be kept near cars or motorcycles.
- Galons containing petrol should not be kept in the kitchen or anywhere you find naked flames.
- Candles should not be used in homes, especially, where you have little children.
- Gas Cylinders should be kept outside the house, so that if there is explosion, the whole house will not be razed down.
- Parents should not allow little children to cook, to avoid fire outbreak. Some Parents are fond of leaving their cooking for children to handle. This is very wrong.
