Meaning of Your Town

MEANING OF THE NAME OF YOUR TOWN AND VILLAGE

This was the subject of our discussion today on air. We discovered through research, that most people do not understand the meaning of the names of their towns and villages. Our Radio station is located in Port Harcourt, South South Nigeria, and we tried to ask our audience the meaning of the names of their towns and villages.
We opened the phone lines for listeners to respond to the question. The question was,
What is the meaning of the name of your town or village?
People called in to give the following answers.
- Emeka Enyi from a place called Ogbunabali, called in to say that he is from a place called Ogbunabaki in Rivers State Nigeria. He said people always think it means People who kill others in the night. But he corrected this impression, by telling us that it means a combination of two towns coming together as one. Two communities Orogbum and Oroabali, coming together to form what is called Ogbumnuabali.

- Another caller, Mr Chukwuladi Otu said he is from Omoku in Rivers State. And it means The land of fishermen.
Emmanuel from Aninri in Enugu State South East Nigeria, said Aninri means the land of foof and Enugu means a land on the hilltop.
Kufere Akpan from Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria, said His town Ikot Abasi, means People of God.
If you want to contibute to this, by sharing the name of your town or village and its meaning with us, drop your comments on this blog.
