As the world marks world No Tobacco day, The world Health Organization is advocating for plain packaging in other to make it less attractive to consumers. Tobacco packets contain fanciful displays to make it attractive to the buyers. But this year, the focus is on plain packaging. But what are the effects of tobacco smoking? Radio Nigeria spoke to a medical doctor, Dr Adeniyi Bamidele, Medical director of federal medical center in Owo Ondo state Nigeria, who outlined the dangers of tobacco smoking, to include, Lung cancer, cardio vascular diseases, cancer of the mouth, throat among others. Dr Bamidele equally said that tobacco smoking can be additive that is why many people find it difficult to stop smoking.
He went further to say that physically, tobacco smoking changes the colour of your teeth and lips. and also causes bad breath.
According to the medical practitioner, smoking also causes premature wrinkles on your body, and makes you to loose your sense of smell and taste.
When we went to the streets to sample people's opinion on why they smoke, some people say they smoke to overcome depression, others said they smoke to feel among the big boys. Some said they smoke just for the fun of it.
Now considering the health risks involved in tobacco smoking, is it wise for you to risk your health and the health of others by smoking. Remember that when you smoke the second hand smoke that you distribute to others around you, is equally very harmful to them.So do you think it is advisable for you to continue smoking? If you have a child, spouse or friend that smokes, or if you are the smoker yourself, as the world celebrates no tobacco day today, why not decide to quit.
