Long queues: Lagos to construct another bridge at Ojota

Ojota-queue2
The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it would construct an additional footbridge at Ojota bus-stop on Ikorodu Road to complement the existing one following the upsurge in its usage. The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, said in a statement that the decision arose out of the need to reduce the long time pedestrians using the bridge were now spending on queue.
He said the construction of the additional bridge had become necessary after the newly erected New Jersey Wall on the median of the expressway.
Ayorinde said that this had effectively curtailed indiscriminate dropping and picking of passengers along the highway as well as dangerous crossing of the road by commuters.
He reiterated that the need for the construction of the wall, which was similar to the measure taken between Ketu and Mile 12 axis of the road, was meant to reduce fatalities on the part of commuters crossing the highway.
Ayorinde said it was erected to also reduce the traffic gridlock caused by commercial buses and motorcycles engaging in indiscriminate dropping and picking of passengers.
He commended the orderly conduct of commuters in the usage of the bridge and urged them to be patient with government until the new one was constructed.

The Fulani herdsmen working in Ondo State have called on the state Police command to investigate the killing of one of them, Dan Bako, who was reportedly murdered on Wednesday evening in Ilara-Mokin, a community in Ifedore Local Government Area of the state. The head of Fulani herdsmen in the State, Alhaji Alli Dongo while reacting to the death of Bako, said the police and other security agencies in the state should ensure that the killers of Bako were brought to book in no distant time for peace to reign in the state.
Bako was reportedly killed on his way to Igbara-Oke, a neighbouring community to Ilara-mokin, where he lived.

Dongo stated that the deceased had been living in Ilara-Mokin for the past seven years and was preparing to relocate to his state when the incident happened.
According to Dongo, the deceased was sent by his kinsmen to buy food for them in Igbaro-Oke and he left with his motorcycle but did not return, saying that his motorcycle was seen beside a bush along the road, while his herds were also seen in the bush without him.
He suspected that the herdsman was killed because his cows destroyed someone’s farm in the town, stating that the person threatened to deal ruthlessly with him and that his killing was reported less than 48 hours after the threat.

hibok Girls: Hillary Clinton writes #BBOG, pledges support On April 15, 201610:34 amIn NewsComments 0 0 1 0 By Omeiza Ajayi ABUJA – A former First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS), and Presidential aspirant of the Democrats, Mrs Hillary Clinton has written the #BringBackOurGirls BBOG advocacy group, pledging greater support in the coming days. The letter which came on the occasion of the second anniversary of the kidnap of 219 school girls at a government school in Chibok, lamented Boko Haram’s resort to the use of very young children as suicide bombers. “Today marks two years since hundreds of schoolgirls were kidnapped in Chibok, Nigeria. They were taken from their dormitory in the dead of night by the terrorist group Boko Haram. Until they’re freed, they and their families won’t know peace. “I stand with the people of Nigeria and all those who have been working diligently to secure the safe return of the Chibok girls and bring an end to Boko Haram’s brutal acts of terror. “My heart aches for the hundreds of boys and girls who have been kidnapped by Boko Haram over the years. They have suffered sexual violence and forced marriage. UNICEF report that one in five suicide bombings by Boko Haram has been carried out by a child – mostly girls, some as young as 8. No child should have to endure these atrocities. “This anniversary is a stark reminder of the work we must do to advance equality for women and girls around the world. It’s the right thing to do, and it improves security and prosperity for everyone. That starts with freeing the Chibok girls, and stopping the terror of Boko Haram”, Clinton stated. On the night of April 14, 2014, about 276 schoolgirls of Government Secondary School, Chibok were abducted in their school. While 57 of them managed to escape at various times, 219 of them remain missing. Consequently, the #BringBackOurGirls’ movement had for the past 717 days engaged in consistent, daily advocacy to ensure their rescue, safe return, reunion and reintegration with their families and communities. 0
