University Of Port Harcourt Black Monday..
This is a detailed explanation of what turned the day into a black Monday.
Two shots were fired....one went straight into his stomach and the other into the left side of his chest....
DID THE POLICE DENY SHOOTING PETER OFURUM?
Say I
was a part of the protesters or that I was at the wrong place at the
right time but don’t say I don’t know what I’m talking about.
On
Monday morning as the protest against the Administration’s policy of no
school fees no exam (which meant carrying over the whole semester), was
going on in Campus and along East/West Road (by Choba small gate and
Delta junction), I was in my room, receiving and making calls, chatting
and getting pictures of the situation in Campus and at the junction.
At
about 12pm, my wing mates and I decided to go round school to see what
was happening. We walked around Abuja Campus, and then went to Delta
Campus before arriving at the junction.
Here at
the junction, students were gathered on the road, displaying placards,
cooking and playing football. The Police who were heavily armed were
camped beside this crowd just observing. In a matter of minutes after my
arrival, public address systems were set up and cool Nigeria music
began to hit the air which the students began to dance to; at a point
during the dancing, an announcement was made that some of our students
were arrested and taken to the Police station in Alakahia. Part of the
students marched down to the station but I remained at the junction.
Minutes
later, I saw students’ running back towards us with vans of a different
set of armed police men coming behind them. As they approached where we
were dancing, they alighted and began running towards us and shooting
at us. We all ran for safety as they shot tear gas everywhere while
shooting bullets into the air. I ran towards Emoha road; at first I ran
to the shops beside Kilimanjaro but before Agofure motors then I crossed
the road to the park where vehicles normally loaded. The armed men now
concentrated on the crowd that ran towards First Bank area.
At this
time a student was shouting at the Police for shooting down a student
who was lying on the ground. The Police men waved down at him showing no
concern for the shot student. As he shouted, he couldn’t come out of
where he was for fear of being shot, I saw him calling on students but
no one came around, after some minutes I crossed over, he came close,
about 2 more students joined us.
At this
time, he (Peter) wasn’t moving, we were scared of taking him across the
road as we didn’t know who was next to be shot, but we braced up and
carried him across the road and put him on a bike with another student
riding with him to Lulu Briggs (Our School hospital). I ran down with
other students to Lulu briggs as it was close by. On getting there, the
doctor said he had no pulse, but asked us to stay out of the room.
Minutes later after administering CPR, he was declared dead by 1.46pm.
At this
point, the tension and agitation among students heightened, a roller
bed was brought out and he was placed on it and taken back to the
junction. As we approached, the Police kept shooting tear gas at us at
point blank range but we kept coming towards them as they retreated.
We
placed him on the road and called out to students who were in hiding to
come out. His body was taken across to show students and then down to
Delta Campus. As we moved to Abuja Campus, part of the students decided
we take him back to the road. At this point, I was too weak, tired and
sad for the death of my fellow Accounting student and Faculty President,
Sir P, so I decided to retreat back to my hostel.
Who
shoots at unarmed students? Students that were unarmed but shot by
heavily armed Police men and in the process a student was shot to death;
who then must have shot him?
Two shots (one at the stomach, the other at the left chest).
Rest in Peace, Sir P.
PS: A
student told me he had a video of the shooting when it happened as we
were waiting outside Lulu briggs when the CPR was administered, but as
he was about sharing it to me via Xender, we heard Sir P has been
declared dead. I lost him and couldn’t get the video again as we rushed
into the hospital. Please bro, share the video, and don’t be afraid.
N/B:
Let the masses know the VC was the first to fire at the students when
they went to his house for dialogue, before his securities joined and
that was hours before the Nigerian police started theirs. That was how
the protest turned from a peaceful protest to a violent one.
