Enugu killings: Ugwuanyi raps security agencies, sets up commission of inquiry
The Enugu State Governor, Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, yesterday took a
swipe at security agencies over last Monday’s killing of some indigenes
of Nimbo community in Uzo Uwani LGA by suspected Fulani herdsmen, saying
they were yet to justify why the carnage occurred despite security
reports and logistics provided to them prior to the attack.
The governor who briefed journalists in Enugu after his meeting with
President Muhammadu Buhari in the presidential Villa, vowed to
constitute a judicial commission of inquiry into the remote causes of
the reported cases of Fulani herdsmen attacks on communities in Enugu
State.
The governor said he was satisfied that the President had ordered the
security agencies to fish out the suspects. His words, “This situation
cannot be allowed to continue. For this reason, I sought audience with
His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed
Forces. Our discussions were frank and cordial. I am very grateful to
the President for his prompt and decisive reaction to the incident in
Nimbo’.
‘The President came out with a clear and unmistakable condemnation of
this dastardly act and gave clear and definite directives to the
security agencies to fish out these criminals and bring them to
justice’.
“Let me state that the State Government provided logistics for these
deployments. After receiving these assurances of deployments to Nimbo, I
felt quite confident that we had done everything possible to forestall
an attack on Nimbo. I have deliberately narrated what transpired at the
Security Council meeting fully conscious of the provisions of the
Nigerian Constitution pertaining to my oath of office. I am doing this
in due discharge of my duties as governor’.
Ugwuanyi lamented that the alleged menace of the Fulani herdsmen in the
past three months were recorded at Awgu Nike, Abi, Nsukka and Nimbo of
recent, saying it was reason for the judicial commission of inquiry to
find the remote causes and prevent future occurrences.
“Now in less than three months, violent clashes have occurred in Enugu
State in Awgu, Nike, Abbi and Nimbo between suspected Fulani herdsmen
and our people.” he said
